Design in decision-making: responsibility, collaboration, and decision-making

As design becomes more central to how organisations operate, the familiar focus on feasibility, viability, and desirability is no longer enough. A fourth pillar, responsibility, is increasingly shaping design practice, reflecting the growing impact design has on business decisions, organisational behaviour, and wider outcomes.
This lecture looks at what that shift means in everyday practice. It explores how designers work with stakeholders, help align perspectives, and contribute to decision-making so that solutions address responsibility alongside traditional design criteria.
With responsibility built into the role, designers move beyond making things look and work well. They are often asked to facilitate collaboration, connect diverse viewpoints across organisations and networks, and navigate the tensions that come with a more strategic role.
Using real-world examples, the lecture offers practical insights and sets the foundation for the hands-on workshop that follows.

  • Duration: 20+10 minutes for Q&A
  • Can your slides be shared with participants: Yes
  • Category: Mix of case study & methodology

Key takeaways for the audience

  • How to communicate design value beyond creativity, in organisational and business terms.
  • Practical approaches to collaborating with stakeholders and working across different perspectives.
  • A clearer understanding of how design can support responsible, impact-oriented outcomes in organisations.

Design in decision-making: building bridges with business (4h)

  • February 20, 2026 at 10:00
  • Estonian Design Centre, Telliskivi Creative City, Telliskivi 60a/7, 2nd floor (above Kivi Paber Käärid restaurant)

Design does not exist in isolation within organisations. To act responsibly and strategically, designers must work across business functions, decision-making structures, and competing priorities. This workshop builds on insights from the work on ten editions of Design Talks Business conference and a decade of service design consultancy experience, offering a hands-on approach to strengthening collaboration between design and business.

Through interactive exercises and case examples, participants will learn how to:

  • Communicate the value of design in business terms without diluting its creative core.
  • Map and understand stakeholder needs, motivations, and decision-making dynamics.
  • Strengthen design’s contribution to decision-making, positioning it as a strategic partner rather than a support function.
  • Prototype collaboration, experimenting with methods that make interdisciplinary work more productive and effective.

By the end of the session, participants will leave with actionable tips, and frameworks to engage stakeholders confidently, bridging the gap between creative vision and business reality. Whether you are working in an agency, in-house teams, or as a consultant, this workshop helps you to elevate your impact and inspire meaningful collaboration.

  • Duration – 4 hours
  • Maximum number of participants – 20-25
  • Workshop format – group work, chairs with tables, 5 tables with 5 people
  • Can we share the slides with workshop participants – yes
